Chemical Ecology Research

In an ongoing collaboration with Dr Cindy Baker (NIWA), Dr Mike Stewart is developing new chemical methods for application in biodiversity conservation (quantitation of pheromones for monitoring of native lamprey and analysis of pheromones implicated in eel taxonomy) and biosecurity (discovery of pheromones or semio-chemicals with potential to control pest freshwater fish and marine crabs). The lamprey method is reaching a mature stage and we are currently working with a number of organisations interested in lamprey restoration to provide catchment-wide population assessments.
