Reconsenting of wastewater discharge consents for Ravensdown Fertiliser, Napier

Dr Ngaire Phillips is responsible for scoping and conducting scientific investigations on aquatic ecology, water quality and ecotoxicology associated with Ravensdown Napier’s wastewater discharge re-consenting process. Field investigations, led by Dr Sharon De Luca of Boffa Miskell, were undertaken to assess existing marine ecological values of the receiving environment, which includes the Waitangi Estuary. A dye study was undertaken to determine discharge dilution under different tidal conditions and was used to determine potential risks associated with process chemicals used at the facility (led by Dr Mike Stewart). Ecotoxicological effects of the discharge were also determined using Whole Effluent Toxicity Testing (WETT) (undertaken by NIWA). The resultant technical baseline report is available. An Assessment of Ecological Effects report was subsequently prepared, taking into account proposed improvements in water quality through treatment upgrades. The resource consent application has been submitted.
